The University of Chicago Diabetes Research and Training Center (DRTC) provides resources for the support and coordination of the research and training activities in diabetes and related metabolic and endocrine disorders of a large and growing number of independently funded but highly interactive investigators. The DRTC stimulates science and behavioral research interest. Moreover, the DRTC has helped create an environment which encourages young investigators to move to the University of Chicago and supports their early development through a highly successful Pilot and Feasibility Program.

Diabetes and endocrinology research has long been a major focus of investigation within the Division of the Biological Sciences of The University of Chicago. The University of Chicago Diabetes Research and Training Center promotes multidisciplinary research in diabetes by

  • Creating an environment that supports important and innovative diabetes research;
  • Raising awareness and interest in fundamental and clinical research locally, regionally and nationally;
  • Enhancing diabetes research, education and training opportunities for patients, students, scientists and clinicians;
  • Attracting and retaining new and young investigators;
  • Providing core services that leverge funding and unique expertise;
  • Fostering interdisciplinary collaborations, especially in emerging areas of research to catalyze new ideas and scientific approaches;
  • Promoting the translation of scientific discoveries from bench to bedside to community to improve public health.

Cores

Administration : The Administrative Core coordinates and directs the research and training efforts in diabetes conducted at the University. The Core also administrates the Pilot and Feasibility Program that supports new investigators in diabetes research as well..

Islet Cell Biology : The Islet Cell Biology Core Laboratory provides independently funded investigators with rodent and human pancreatic islets from normal and diabetic animals for their studies. It also maintains insulinoma cell lines for distribution. The Core also..

Molecular Biology, Genomics & Genetics : The Molecular Biology and Genetics Core Laboratory of the DRTC has been in operation since 1977 with a major emphasis on molecular biology and recently genetics. This Core helps independently funded investigators with an interest in diabetes..

Clinical Investigation & Informatics : The Physiology Core consolidates the expertise and experience related to in vivo measures of parameters of glucose tolerance and physiological regulation of carbohydrate metabolism accumulated over more than 15 years by DRTC investigators. This..

Assay & Analytical : The Ligand Assay Core Laboratory of the DRTC has been in operation since 1977. The name of this Core has been changed from Radioimmunoassay and Clinical Studies to Ligand Assay Core Laboratory to reflect movement away from radioimmunoassay to..

Transgenic & Gene Modification : The Transgenic Core of the DRTC has been in operation since 1991. The overall objective of this Core is to continue to provide high quality, timely, and cost-effective transgenic mouse services.Provide advice and guidance in..

Prevention & Control : The University of Chicago’s Prevention and Control (P & C) Core aims to develop and evaluate ways to improve diabetes care and prevention in real-world settings, particularly among vulnerable groups such as African Americans, indigent..
