Research

Da-Wei Gong, M.D., Ph.D. studies molecular and cellular mechanisms of obesity and diabetes. Dr. Gong uses sophisticated functional genomics techniques and bioinformatics to identify novel genes responsible for energy and glucose metabolism and insulin signaling. With these approaches, he identified a novel uncoupling protein (UCP-3) that is present in muscle and is likely to be an important regulator of energy expenditure. He is currently performing high throughput sequencing of adipocyte cDNA libraries, and has identified many other novel clones. He plans to utilize cDNA microarray technology, in vitro expression, and transgenic approaches to characterize further these novel clones and to define their relevance to energy metabolism, insulin signaling and adipocyte function.
