Kristi Silver, M.D. is involved in both basic and clinical research programs related to the role of pancreatic beta cells in the development of diabetes mellitus. Her research projects include screening candidate genes to identify those important for insulin secretion and susceptibility to type 2 diabetes, identifying genes contributing to beta cell abnormalities in rodent models of insulin deficiency such as the GK rat, and determining the effects of gene variants on insulin secretion in subjects with and without diabetes.

 

In addition to research, Dr. Silver remains active in patient care. She is the Associate Director for the JoslinDiabetesCenter at University of Maryland and has headed a number of initiatives to improve inpatient diabetes care. Dr. Silver’s interest in beta cells has also led to her involvement in the University of Maryland Islet Transplant Program.
